The traditions of bathing in thermal and medicinal waters go back 2000 years to Roman times in Budapest. Perhaps there is no other capital where baths dating back to the time of the Turkish occupation are still operating today. Their culture is based on the healing power of the thermal waters which break to the surface along the banks of the Danube.

If you want to relax after a long sightseeing tour or you're just serious about your health - specially if you have some locomotor disease - Budapest offers you a wide range of baths and open-air swimming pools.

Before you enjoy the facilities of these baths you have to take a few tips and warnings into consideration :

	there are general contraindications regarding hot thermal waters :high blood pressure, heart diseases, tumours, asthmatic diseases. We recommend to contact your doctor first
	in most baths the latest entry is prior to the indicated closing time.
	there are many excellent hotels in Budapest and in the countryside with own thermal baths. They usually have a well-skilled team with doctors being at your disposal.

The Gellért baths together with Gellért Hotel was opened in 1918. The wave pool was added in 1927, and in 1934 the bubble pool was built on the site of the former winter garden. Nearly all the medical services of a spa are here available. The Gellért is renowned not only for its waters but also for its superb Art Nouveau architecture and details.
